Reading Assignment: Since we are having an extra class on the 4th and we didn't get through the entire assignment today, you can either read twenty more pages in the book or finish it. I am guessing you will finish it because you will want to know what happens to Charlie.

Writing Assignment: For the writing assigment, please write a paragraph that describes how the author Betsy Byars uses the character of Charlie to show readers that Sara is a good person at heart ("At heart" is an idiom meaning that something is true in reality although it might not appear to be true from the outside). So your writing would begin something like this: " In many ways, Sara, the heroine of Betsy Byars' The Summer of the Swans is outwardly ___________________ ( You fill in the blanks with the adjectives of your choice and don't forget to include the article a or an) teenager. But through her relationship to Charlie, Byars makes it clear that ________________________. This is where you would describe how Sara's true character is revealed through how she acts with her brother.

Here's Mark's response to the assignment:

In many ways, Sara, the heroine of Betsy Byars' The Summer of the Swans is outwardly a pessimistic and unhappy girl and she doesn't make others happy. But through her relationship to Charlie, Byars makes it clear that she is a nice girl inwardly. She really cares Charlie. When Charlie was gone, she tried her best to find him. She also doesn't want to trouble others. When her friends came and wanted to help her find Charlie, she didn't agree with them at first because she doesn't want to trouble them. Although there are still some problems on her, I am sure that she will become better and better at last.

Hello,Laraine In many ways, Sara, the heroine of Betsy Byars' The Summer of the Swans is outwardly pessimistic and awful girl. And she seldom feels happy and can seldom make others feel nice. She always complains that how her feet are big; her orange sneakers are ugly;how she looks bad……But through her relationship to Charlie, Byars makes it clear that she is a compassionate and caring girl. When Charlie loses, at first she just looks like nothing happen and this makes us think she isn't really love her brother. But when she finds out that Charlie is really lose, she becomes very anxious. This shows she loves and cares about her brother so much. At this time in normal she will sit and watch TV but for her brother she goes out to the mountain to find her brother. And when she knows that she made a mistake on her brother's watch, she can say "Sorry" to Joe and face him.

Wow Enya, You really nailed the specific detail part of the assignment. You have backed up every single point you make with events from the story, and your description of the contrast in Sara's character is, in my opinion, exactly right.  From a miserable, unhappy girl, who can't make anyone else happy either, she emerges as a loving, and protective sister, who cares enormously about her brother.  I think that's exactly the picture the author, Betsy Byars, wanted to emerge for her readers.
