Reading Assignment for Next Week:   Please The Wolf and the Seven Kids  and Rapunzel. Also look up and report on why the Brothers Grimm are such important figures in the world of fairy tales.

Forum Assignment:  Please explain what you think the fairy tale Lon Po Po wants to teach young readers. Then explain what about the story makes you think that. Here’s an example from another fairy tale so you can see what I mean:

The story called “Cinderella” teaches children to be kind and good, even if they are surrounded by people who are mean.  Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters are really mean to her. They make her do all the work in the house and force her to wear old, ugly clothes.  But Cinderella is always kind to them. She always forgives them.  In the end, her kindness is rewarded, and she marries the prince.  Her stepsisters can now only look on her great happiness with envy and jealousy.  The story teaches children to be good even to people who are cruel. Being good is what gets rewarded.

In the story of Lon Po Po, Shang, the eldest child, was the first person who discovered Po Po was actually a wolf. But Shang wasn’t afraid or nervous. She was very clever and stayed calm all the time, so she saved her younger brother and sister in the end.

The story teaches me that when you get in danger, you have to think how to get help or help yourself. And do not be afraid when you are in danger. You have to keep calm. For example, when you meet a snack in the wild, do not be nervous and try to escape. Do not attack the snack because if you try to attack it, it will think you are an enemy and bite you. Another thing is listen to your parents and do not open the door for strangers, especially when you are home alone, or you will be in trouble just like the story of Lon Po Po.

Hi Alfonso, Yes, no question about it Shang was a smart one. Thanks to her, the wolf was not successful, and I think you are exactly right. The story does focus on how keeping calm in a dangerous situation pays off.

It's interesting to me, too, that the Chinese version has the children outwit the wolf while in the German version that's made it's way into English, the little girl has to be saved by the woodsman.

The writing here is wonderful. I have a couple of comments, which I will send via e-mail. Great work!  Laraine

Here is Jackie's response He does not have access to the Forum at the moment.

The story called “Lon popo” teaches us to be friendly and don’t be bad like the wolf, the three children were very brave, even the big wolf wanted to eat them, they had beat the wolf, and the wolf was died. The wolf wanted some gingko nuts, so the children had a good plan. I think they also were very clever, the bad wolf was very mean. So we can’t being mean and bad, if we being mean and bad, you will get some retribution.

Today I’ll tell you a interesting story whichis my favorite, called “Lon Po Po”. It tells us when you face a bad man, you should become calm and resourceful .

Three gutty girl---Shang , Tao and Paotze lived in a country with their dear mother . One day of their grandmother’s birthday , their good mother set off to see her . When their mother wentout , Anold wolf who lived nearby knew it . The bad wolf came upand told three lovely kids: “ My little jewels , this is your dear grandmother , your Po Po , let me in!” But the Shang—-she was not only the eldest , she was the most clever in three girl . She discoveried their‘Po Po’is  deceitful . Shang thought industriously and had a wonderful plan--shetold their ‘popo’ a story about gingko nuts which was soft and tender. The important things wasthat only one taste and she would live forever . They climb on the top of the tree outside the door . The wolf who was under the tree wanted to eat the kingko nuts which taste great .Finally , the wolf bumped her head and died miserably .

Next day ,three children’s mother came back ! They toldtheirmother this exciting story , they all felt happy.

This story teaches us when you face a big doom or are in dangerous , you must think in your head and should get clever , courageous , and brave .Don’t afraid the bad man,but first you must learn to protect yourself in a mean what you can. likethe clever bang, caringKate Shelley etc. It’s a fantastic novel I love too!
