Reading Assignment: Read pages 1-18 in Lon Po Po.  Be ready to talk about your favorite fairy tale.

Writing Assignment : After she saved the Midnight Express from plunging into Honey Creek, Kate Shelley was called a hero Explain what you think makes a person heroic. Is a hero for you someone who risks his or her life? Kate Shelley risked her life for people she did not even know. Is that part of being a hero? Or is a hero anyone willing to risk his or her life for someone else, even if that person is a friend or family member? Can a person be a hero without risking his or her life?

If you like write a second paragraph. Use the second paragraph to describe a heroic person you know or have heard about.

Start your writing with the words, "For me, a hero is someone who...." Then write a few sentences explaining what you think makes someone heroic. Here is an example for you to look at and follow. Don't copy it. Use it to guide your own writing.

Example

For me, a hero is someone who knows what it means to be afraid. But whether man or woman, heroes don’t let fear stand in their way of helping others. They face their fears in order to make sure that those in need are safe from danger. Heroes are willing to risk their lives if it means saving the lives of others.

When the Twin Towers in America were attacked by terrorists in 2001, fire and policemen rushed to the scene. They were called "first responders." Their job was to find out who was dead and who was alive. They had to go into buildings ready to fall at any moment. They must have been very afraid. But they did their job anyway. Some of them died while in the act of saving others. All of the men and women who risked their lives that day were heroes.

this is my fairy tales: A group of monkeys playing in the Woods, some of them hopping on the tree, and some in the mess on the floor, be gay. They are a small monkey, running alone in the woods next to a well and play around, which lie on the edge of, well inside the neck, suddenly shouted: "don't, not so! Moon has fallen into the well! "Originally, the little monkey sees there's a moon in the well. A big monkey, hears cries and ran to the well in the well to see, also was taken aback, shouted, "Oh, Oh, moon has fallen into the well LAH! "Their cries alerted the monkeys, old monkey with a large group of monkeys are running towards the well. When they look at the Moon in the well, exclaimed: "Gee up, Gee finished! The Moon really fell into the well again! "Were chattering monkeys, trouble. At last, the old monkey said: "we don't shout, come on, we get the moon out now! "Monkeys are duty-bound to respond to the proposal, joining the ranks of a bottle. Well there is an old tree, old first jumped into the tree, hanging upside down on his head in a tree, other monkeys in turn one you hold my legs, I check your head, hanging into a long, upside down into the wells. Monkey light, hanging on the bottom, it reached into the water, you can catch the moon. Monkey thought, which we can always remove the moon came up. They were happy. Small monkeys in the hands of well water, the shining Moon grabbed, but caught a few drops, but could not catch the moon. Monkey kept seize, remove, toss for a while, still cannot catch the moon. The monkeys hanging upside down for a long time to feel very tired, have been unable to. Begin complained: "the fishing soon Ah, how not to catch up? "Some cried:" Mama, I'm ashamed! Do not hang it! ” Older monkey gradually aching leg pain, it suddenly looked up and suddenly find that the Moon is still in the sky, and exclaimed: "no fishing, no fished, the Moon in the sky! ” All the monkeys looked up into the view, really fine in the sky, the moon. Because monkeys do not know the truth about the Moon in the well, to take it seriously, so busy lol, stupid and ridiculous.

Hi Shirley, This is lovely piece of writing about Malala Yousafzai. The quotation from Malala is particularly well-chosen. She is a wonderful example of a heroic person. So tell me do you think then that being a hero requires the risking of one's life? That was the other part of the assignment, to define your idea of a hero. I would be interested in your response.

Thank you for choosing such an important and extraordinary young woman as your example of heroic behavior.   I will send you a few other comments via e-mail.   See you on Tuesday. Laraine

Hi Shirley, This was actually an assignment for the next class. But great, you are, as we say, ahead of the game (You have done the work way in advance). For class, though, see if you can tell the story in just a few sentences. Fairy tales usually have a point, something they want to tell the reader. What do you think is the point of your fairy tale?

I know one version of the fairy tale has the monkeys following the lead monkey. They all end up in the water, and the point is, If you follow someone who is dumb, you can end up the same way.  Do you think your fairy tale has the same point or a different one?

Thank you for sharing it on the forum.  Laraine

Alfonso's Homework:

For me, a hero is someone who is brave and powerful then other people, so he or she can protect others. I also think a hero will help others even risking his or her life. For example, firefighters will do their best to save other people’s life even though they do not know them no matter how dangerous the situation is. Those are what I think make someone heroic.

@ Alfonso

I think you have perfectly expressed what makes a hero for you. And I agree that a part of being heroic is a willingness to protect even those you do not know personally. I like too that you have given a specific example of a hero.  Nice clear sentences and a very nice ending.

I'll send you a couple of comments via e-mail but overall, great work!

See you on Tuesday.  Laraine

@Jackie

What a lovely response. Although I never thought of that very before, it's true. A hero has to think that life is valuable. If heroes didn't think life was valuable, they wouldn't make the effort. They would just think "Oh they will be happy in the afterlife. So I won't risk my life for them now"

Self-confidence is important too. And again, I had not thought of that.

If you have time, perhaps add a sentence or two giving an example of a person or persons who are heroic. For Alfonso, it was fire fighters, and for Shirley, it was Malala, the young girl who was shot because she spoke out about girls getting an education.  It's up to you. I'll send you an example to see if that can give you some ideas.

In any case, this is excellent work.

See you on Tuesday. Laraine

Elsa's Homework:

Elsa did her homework in PowerPoint. I copied her answers here and attached the original slides.

žThe hero means a man distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and strength in the dictionary . I think the heroes have morals , conscience , decency and higher feeling.  they do anything to help somebody, but maybe they don’t be known by others.

But how to be a hero? The heroes must be willing to do their best to help others , if they find someone or something are in the danger. They all  are the person with adventurous spirit. They never consider  if they will be  in the the danger too, what should they do?

žFor example, Wangerxiao is a hero I think. He was only 10 years old at that time. When he was looking after cows on the hill ,the enemies found him and let him leadind the way  for them.

žHe was so clever and brave. He led the group of Japanese went into the place which the  Red Army had lurked around there. We won at last ,but Wangerxiao was killed by the enemy.

žI am so grieved! I love Wangerxiao for ever! I want to be a clild likes him. I want I will be a brave clild too.
