For Homework: Please read p. 82-109 (Ch. 15- 19) of Summer of the Swans.

Then, post responses on the forum to the following questions:
1. What do we know about Sara’s father, and his relationship with his family?
2. Who is Joe Melby?
3. What does Sara learn about Joe, and how does she behave?

Also, please translate the paragraph at the bottom of p.90 beginning with “I just know. There’s something about me that makes me understand Charlie” into Chinese. You do not need to post your translation on the forum, but instead be prepared to translate your work back into English during next class.

Please come prepared with your favorite quote /part from Ch. 15-19 for next class.

I am making another post that has the vocabulary words we went over today.  If you have time, feel free to make several sentences using these words so that you remember them!

Have fun!

Sara’s father used to be a huge pillar in his family, for he cared for their children and smiling was a symbol of him. However, sometimes fate always plays some joke when people are totally immersed in their happiness. Sara’s mother’s death and the disease of Charlie accidentally happend in this family. Since it was so hard for him to accept this huge change, he became silent people and had little strength to care for his family. Sooner and later, he became an evil for Sara, because she did not receive so much love from him. For her, he is an irresponsable stranger rather than her father. He is boy who was wronged by Sara, since Sara thought that he had stolen Charlie’s watch. However, Joe Melby is a tolerant boy. He not only crossed out this unhappy thing with Sara, but also helped Sara to find Charlie, and provided everybody some helpful hint. He is also easy to communicate. Sara and he soon become friends. She first knew that Joe did not steal Charlie’s watch from Mary. At first, she did not accept the truth, because of self- esteem. However, when she found out that Joe was going to assist her to find Charlie and also Joe is a tolerant person, she realized that she should say sorry to him, even though it is embarras and hard.
