Hello Class,

Congratulations on finishing The Crucible!

For next week, we will dive into Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart.  It is on page 172 of the Poe book.  We are only reading two pages of the story for next class, so that we can focus in on difficult words and phrasing.  You can end your reading at, "...I looked in upon him while he slept."

Since we are taking our time with the reading, it means you will have more time to write and edit a wonderful essay!  Take your time to organize it and write about all sides of the topic.  Here are the six topics you can choose from:
  1. How do the witch trials empower people who were previously powerless?
  2. Discuss the changes, or the "character arc" that Reverend Hale goes through in the play.
  3. What are some of the themes of the play?  How do they make it both universal and enduring?
  4. A crucible is defined as a severe test. Write an essay discussing the significance of the title. What is "the crucible" within the play and how does it bring about change or reveal an individual's true character?
  5. Why are Danforth, Hathorne, and the other authorities so resistant to believing the claim that Abigail and the other girls are lying?
  6. Analyze Reverend Parris. What are his motivations in supporting the witch trials?
(James, since you are re-joining us, you can just write about what you've been up to and what you've been learning about for the last 6 weeks!)

Have fun!
