1. For homework, please begin reading Lon Po Po by Ed Young. Read until p. 14.

2. Translate the first page of Lon Po Po into Chinese on a separate piece of paper. You do not need to post your translation on the forum, but instead be prepared to translate your work back into English during our next class.

3. Please also answer the following question about When Jessie Came Across the Sea:

Do you hope to live in another country one day (It does not have to be America)? Please write a “letter,” imagining that you have moved to this country and are writing a letter back to a friend that describes what it is like. What things do you see? What are you doing? Do you like it? or not? Use your imagination and be creative. Write 1 or 2 paragraphs.

Dear Chives:

      Hi!

I've been in America for two weeks. I try my best to get used to living in America. There are something abnormal around me. Amercans eat bread for breakfast, fastfood for lunch and western food for supper. I liked eating fastfood and western food when I was in China. However, I couldn't be full after I eating them. Maybe it's not suitable for me to eat fastfood and western food everyday. I really want to eat a bowl of rice now!!!

There is another weird thing. I couldn't make friends with me!!! I tried to be confident when I talked to somebody, but I was still a little nervous. I could make a lot of friends when I was in China, but I couldn't make any when I am in America. What on earth is the matter??? This is really weird.

It is a bit hard for me to live in America, but I will keep trying to make my life better. I am an extraodinary person!!!

Best wishes,

Lily

Dear Gary:

    Hello!

How is your day? I have been in America for two months. At first, I cannot adapt to the new environment because of the different culture and different hobbies. For example, some Americans often eat a lot of sweet food in the afternoon, but I feel greasy with the food and I can't understand why they like it!

However, I make a lot of friends because I begin to contact them, also I introduce them to the Chinese culture, we often go to the Chinatown to hve some food. I am happy that I canmake friends now!

Do you feel curious with my American life? Come to America and I will introduce you to my new friends!

Dear Tiffany:

I am in Korea now. Seoul has a huge population, subways and buses are always full of people. I also have problems in communication because I cannot speak Korean. Korea is not as rich as China, people seldom eat meat. Well, they only have them at festivals or some special days. Winter is very cold here, it snows all the time. I have to wear sweaters many times. Anyway, environment here is quite cleaner than China. I feel comfortable outside. I haven’t any friends yet, I hope I will have a friend in the future.

          Yours, Jessie
