For homework, please read pages 65-111 (Chapters 11-18) of Island of the Blue Dolphins.

Respond to the following prompt on the forum (250 words minimum):
It is as if Karana speaks to the sea, confides in the cliffs, whispers to the wind- and to the yellow-eyed gray dog, the fearsome enemy that she tames to friendship, Karana reflects “Because of this I was not lonely. I did not know how lonely I had been until I had Rontu to talk to.” (Ch. 16 p.97) Describe how Karana interacts with her natural environment. What is your relationship to the natural world?

Please create two discussion questions for class.

Translate the last paragraph on p.70 in Ch. 9 beginning “I put the ribs together with their edges almost touching, and standing….”

Remember, you will eventually be translating your Chinese back into English!

Lastly, keep track of a few words that you are unsure of to add to your vocabulary list.  Write them down with the page number and context.  The words to remember from this week were: stretching, mesa, gorges/gorging, and bowstring.

Original Post

The relationship between her and the natural environment is she used natural environment to make her stronger, for example: she dug the cave for herself, she ate the shellfish, and she got a wild dog named Rontu. But she had no one to talk until she got the dog, because she was alone to get food, to wait the ship, to store the food. She was using the natural environment all the time. For me, it looks like I don't have any relationship with the natural environment, but sometimes, I will ride my bike to the natural place, like the suburb.
