When Avery cry in the bathroom, after Leslie talk with Avery. She knew about Avery’s family. Avery’s father always beat her. That why she always beat other students.

“ did you know her father beats her?”

“ lots of kids’s father beat’ um.” will you get on with it?

“ no, I mean really beats her. The kind of beating they take people to jail for in Arlington” she shook her head in disbelief. (P95/96)

Janice Avery is a poor girl, she has a not good family, and his father always hit her. And about that thing(Avery's love message), her friends betrayed her, they showed it to all the students, even teachers.

We can find in my book page112:

''And those two--two--"She looked for a word vile enough to describe Janice Avery's Friends and found none."Those two girls blabbed it all over the seventh grade.''
